To answer your questions snoppy30, the number of people who get snared by just lottery scams is quite frightening. In the News forum I posted information about just the US residents who got scammed by scammers in the West Indies and the details are alarming. Apart from a couple who died as a result of being scammed, it was believed that the criminals were behind 500 fatalities in the West Indies caused by fighting over the proceeds.

As regards how they get phone details

Dotti wrote:Sometimes it's even simpler than that. Some spammers/scammers will simply use a computer to automatically send messages to a random group of numbers, without knowing which ones are active. All they do is pick one or more mobile prefixes, and then just spam the text to every number in that series.

There are also many places that people willingly give their details, such as when they post their CV's on job sites, and for a small cost a person/company can get access to them. Considering that the people doing this are criminals, it won't be difficult for them to access stolen card details to pay for them.

If the police catch one person, it's like removing one ant from an ant colony, and it doesn't do anything to stop the problem.

The most effective solution is to make people aware of the scam so that they don't fall for it, and make it unprofitable for the scammers.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

Same thing here I´m in Dominican Republic and last night my cell phone beeped indicating a new incoming text but I didn´t bother to check until I got up this mourning and there I was a million dollars winner from out of nowhere, never played a ticket on this so called ¨freelotto¨ so I quickly checked scamwarners and found out what you all found out.
Here is the text:
Your mobile number was selected as a winner of 1.000000.00 with Draw No. 13 01 22 20 13 10 25, email to [email protected] to claim.

I´m glad I found scamwarners because only by unveiling their actions we can stop them from getting more victims.

I'm in Australia and I received the 750,000 text on 17 Mar, 2013 from +447415925672. This morning (0200!)I received a phone call from the UK +447866755833 but there was only background noise when I answered it. Is there anyone to whom we can complain to end this scam?

A friend of mine received the exact same sms in Israel. The accompanying email letters were obvious as hoaxes, they were riddled with terrible spelling and grammatical errors. For some people the prospect of making an easy 750K or 1Mil is too hard to resist and unfortunately there are people who fall for these scams all to easily. :(

Thank you for these reports.

For anyone looking in, it is NOT possible to win a Lottery that you did not enter. No Lottery authority will notify you by text message telling you you won.

Your best action is to delete the message after you report it here. There is no free lunch.
