Emika Ogidi, 33, used information from more than 40 victims taken from snatched post or online phishing emails as part of 'sophisticated' scam

Up to 700 bank accounts were created using stolen information, often obtained by stealing post, from students at the University of Birmingham and the University of Surrey, where Ogidi was a student.

More than 40 victims were either conned through rent fraud - where they would pay a deposit and rent on a property they thought was controlled by Ogidi - or via phishing emails where people were tricked into sending their bank details.

“Some were pensioners who were reliant on the money stolen and one victim had money taken which had been saved for a house purchase.”

The money laundering through the accounts was described as sophisticated by the judge and it is thought the cash was transferred back to other unidentified parties in Ogidi’s home country, Nigeria.
