This is an up and coming type of fraud. In this case it involves an email account hack, but note that it wasn't the victim's email account that was hacked.

Other versions can be carried out by phone or by rogue employees diverting funds.

Beware whenever bank details are changed and confirm any change independently by phone.

Fraudsters take £2,400 in builder's email scam

A woman has been conned out of £2,400 by fraudsters who hacked into her builder's email account.

Xxxxx Xxxxxxx, a 38-year-old copywriter, had work done to her house earlier this year, and builder Xxx Xxxxxx emailed her requesting payment on Monday, November 9.

The next morning she received an email from Mr Xxxxxx's account asking her to put the money into a different bank account as the payment was urgent.

She transferred the money the same day. When Mr Xxxxxx said that it hadn't come through, she emailed him checking the details of the bank account.

It wasn't until that Friday, November 19, that she received a message from Mr Xxxxxx saying he had found her email in the deleted folder, and he had never sent the email with the new bank account details.
