Con artist family duped 42 vulnerable pensioners out of £1.3m life savings to splurge on flashy sports cars and property in Dubai

This is an appallingly common telephone scam.

The telling part of the story is this

The scammers were fed contact details by call centre worker….

Now it doesn't mention what call centre she worked for and, theoretically it could be any, but realistically the most effective place to pick up phone numbers and account details, along with demographic details (age and bank balance) to enable the most appropriate targets to be selected, would be a bank call centre.

Email scammers might pump out high volume mails hoping that they may happen to hit a person with the bank that they have chosen, but not phone scammers. Even if that isn't the case then the anonymous accounts to receive stolen money need to be set up with banks.

If scammers can pick up people's financial details so easily, and the many recent examples make it clear that it is, and then set up fake anonymous bank accounts also easily, then the scope for scammers is unlimited.
