A NEW scam is targeting WhatsApp users by encouraging them to download a 'Gold' version of the app – which actually steals their data.

Users of the messaging app are reporting receiving mysterious messages offering a 'limited edition' version of WhatsApp Gold which is 'only used by big celebrities'.

It also includes a link to download the app.

But people who click it are in fact taken to a website which can potentially cause malicious software to be downloaded onto their phones.

And now security experts are warning people to ignore any similar messages at all costs – and to delete them immediately.
