Unless you are planning to work at home from France, then yes, it is a scam.

CumminsDslPwr, thanks for the info about ipTRACKERonline.com. That's a service I did not know about!

Dotti, yes, that's pretty much what I suspect, too. Probably shipping drugs in and out of the country or something like that.

The email itself LOOKS fairly legit, unlike most employment scam emails. It LOOKS almost like something that would be posted on CareerBuilder or Monster. But there's definitely something fishy about the fact that it was sent out as an email from a free email address, RATHER than posting it on a job board. Also, even though many years ago, I used to see "blind job ads" in the newspaper classified ads where you were only given a P.O. Box to which to send your resume, nearly every legitimate job ad I've ever seen online either has a company name or, if it's a blind ad posted by a recruiter, the name of a recruiting firm.

Thanks for the confirmation.

A shipping mule (aka package mule) receives packages of merchandise bought with stolen credit cards at his home address and forwards them overseas to the scammer. This is different from a drug mule, who swallows packets containing drugs and travels.

I'm not aware of scam gangs in France, but a job looking for USA residents hiring with an email from France doesn't make much sense.

France is an ethnically diverse nation with about six million North Africans. It is currently estimated that 40% of the French population descends from different waves of migrations. According to the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, it has an estimated 4.9 million foreign-born immigrants and 2 million of these have acquired French citizenship. France is the leading asylum destination in Western Europe with an estimated 50,000 applications in 2005.

According to INSEE, since 2004, 200,000 immigrants entered annually in the territory. One out of two was born in Europe and one in three in Africa.

If Africans are there, there are most definitely gangs of scammers there.

This is a harsh statement. While Africans are there as well as American, Arabic and Asians we can not classify a group of people. In most cases we see that most of scams are committed by criminal in West Africa not North Africa. Scammers are also located in Malaysia, UK, India, US, Thailand, Philippines and etc.
