Room for Rent and other rental scams
#272215 by Christos Dgr Fri Oct 23, 2015 7:17 am
I am arriving in Berlin on 01.11.15, and during the last days I have been arranging the last paperwork of the room I agreed to rent. I have signed a contract, as well as the Landlord, and also paid the security deposit and the 1st month rent.
However, like 2 hours ago, the landlord contacted me and said to me that he wishes 2 more months before sending me the keys. He has agreed to change the contract but he wishes that amount of cash.
Is such a thing usual? Why such a shitty behaviour? He has agreed to send me the amount of money I sent, but I was wondering if that amount of money is a norm.
Also, if anyone is familiar with some sort of available room in a WG, please pm me. Obviously in urgent need :P
EDIT: To sum up, yeah it was a scam. I will leave the details here, just to be available:
Name: Rita Loofer (Today she changed her skype name to "Corina Barth") Mob number: +44 708 764 2567 e-mail: [email protected] Passport ID:802523810 Flat address: Burgerheimstrasse 12, 10365 Berlin, Germany (2nd floor, flat 2) Address in London: 315B, Ladbroke Grove, W10 6HA London UK
If you have in mind some agency that I should report the above (besides the police) please do inform me.

You're right, it is a definite scam. No legitimate landlord would require rent and a deposit for a flat rental without giving you the opportunity to see it in person.

If you're in the UK, at the minimum report it to Action Fraud and your local police department. Since they were using a German address for the flat or if you sent money to Germany, you should also report it to Europol, although Action Fraud might forward it to them anyway.

The UK: Action Fraud http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

Europol: https://www.europol.europa.eu/content/r ... ime-online

Unfortunately, you must be very careful about renting through the internet - sites are rampant with scammers. These are red flags too look for:
