To put a slight twist on Shakespeare, I believe there is something rotten in the state of Amsterdam (let alone the state Craigslist London vacation rentals is in).

Definately fake. A classic +4470 telephone number (always a sure sign of a scam), the site is only a few days old and a whole lot of other fake site signs. As I know this very scammer sometimes reads the forum I won't be going into too much details though ;)

The site has been reported and should go down soon.

Hi,

My name is Antonela and I responded to an ad offering a room in Nieuwmarkt 1, in Amsterdam. It was offered by a man called Mustafa with this phone number
Phone number removed due to uncertainty. ~Bubbles
We made an appointment for last Sunday and a guy called Juan, who said he worked for Mr. Mustafa showed me the apartment. On Monday we agreed on the terms, and I paid his first month and deposit (1300 euros) and we signed a contract. He gave me the keys and left.

The apartment has been under renovations and it was completely empty, therefore although I got the keys last monday we set up the move-in day for this friday (tomorrow). I have been, either way going to the apartment every day since I got the keys and bringing some stuff but it was brought to my attention that "the owner", this guy called Mustafa not Juan hadnt picked up the phone since the day I paid.

I looked the apartment up on the internet and saw that it was offered on another website by another real state agency. I called them and they said they didnt know any Mustafa, were not aware of anyone having the keys of the apartment and the contract I signed is fake since Mustafa is not the owner of the place.

I filed the police report but they cannot do much..only try to track this person down by his cell phone number, IP address and kamernet.nl registration.

There might be other people also scammed by this person who has the keys of the apartment but has nothing to do with the real owner.

Please let me know how we can take this further.. at least to prevent others from being scammed.

Thanks,

Antonela

Welcome to ScamWarners Antonela. What happened to you is terrible and rather brazen. We deal with internet scammers specifically see this thread. I don't know anything about the laws in the Netherlands. I know that some places have rental boards. I would look into that. I see that you already went to the police. I would continue to visit the police until I got a satisfactory answer. There ought to be a fraud squad or something like that you could talk to.

I am going to pull the phone number because we do not deal with this kind of situation. I have concerns that posting a phone number with no other evidence could lead to abuse of someone we don't know anything about. We have ways of checking email data to ascertain evidence of a scam.

If you have other information like emails and headers, that would help us confirm the scam please post them.

Again, welcome and best of luck to you.
