Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hello there,

I'm posting about a recurrent scam in Toronto: a guy offering a 2 bdr + 2 baths in downtown Toronto, just steps away from the Air Canada Centre. The guy/group calls himself David and below you can read the emails we exchanged with him.

We saw the ad on the kijiji website. He was asking for a very low rent: $1,150 for a brand new condo and we decided to send him a message asking for more details and to confirm the price was right (it was toooo good). Minutes after sending the message I decided to take a look at the ad again (to check if I hadn't misunderstood something) and for my surprise, it had disappeared.

I thought "well, the guy saw my message and notice the rent was wrong so he deleted the ad". For my surprise, a few days later he replied. Then I decided to do some research and found out that the same unit at the same building wouldn't be listed for less than $2,500/month while he was only asking $1,150 all included (even cable and internet).

I replied to him anyway just to check and he answered me a second time, that's when I decided to stop.

Beware of this guy, it seems he's pretty active in all Canada with offers that are too good to be true.

RENTAL SCAM IN CALGARY KIJIJI - DAVE ERDOS! LIVES IN HUNGARY

At first, I was very excited about the apartment listed, I received several emails from him and talked to him on the phone and he was a very nice man. However, I had a feeling something was wrong so I asked my friend to do some research and discovered he was a scam.

First email I received: I thought the studio was a good price but figured it was not in a very good area of Calgary (South East) and that is why the price was so good.

I would never give my money to someone without first viewing the place, however, I received this in my email. I contacted a live customer support representative from Rentpost. The person spoke broken English and did not acknowledge the scam nor apologize for it, leading me to believe Dave built a customer support window with the Rentpost logo.

I received the same email. I knew it was a scam after reading the first sentence. There's no such thing as that good of a deal in Calgary. Good luck finding a shithole apartment for less than $1000. Anyway, I hope no one falls for this kind of crap.

I received the same emails, saying he was listing a 1 bedroom condo on Bay St. in Toronto. He said the same gist, just this time it's a project for 4 years in Hungary (not London) and his name is David Erdos. It seemed like a scam from the price of it, but I investigated. He asks to be wired 1st and last month's rent to "hold your spot" before even showing the apartment. He claims to have no friends or a property manager of the building willing to show the unit, or to vouch for him (except for Rent Poster, which is meaningless) and would not give the name of his engineering firm or anything else.

Thank god I checked online before going to the bank because I was going to make the transfer today even though I said I couldn't until next week he had already started the process. I thought it was fishy because he sent an email to me with bcc:, his email address seemed to funny to be a well paid civil engineer's, and I also couldn't find a civil engineer with his name on LinkedIn. And now I found this discussion and is confirmed that the scam is still going on. jeez.

You can move in in August , there is absolutely no problem but we need to start the transaction now so I can be sure that I have an tenant from August ! This transaction is not made face to face, this is the whole reason for using RentTrack, for both of us to be 100% protected. If you don`t like the apartment they will be sending the money back to you and you will send back the keys and contract. RentTrack can't release the funds without your approval.

7 - RentTrack will verify the transfer and if everything is in order they will start the shipping procedures using UPS or TNT Next Day Shipping Service .

8 - After you receive the package, you will go and check the apartment and in 5 days (inspection time) you must contact RentTrack to inform them if you keep the apt or not and if everything is in order you will instruct RentTrack to send me the information about the money deposit and I will be able to receive the funds. If you don`t like the apartment they will be sending the money back to you and you will send back the keys and contract. RentTrack can't release the funds without your approval.

Thank you for your interest in my apartment located in 1111 - 6 Avenue Southwest, T2P 5M5. The apartment is in excellent condition and it's just like in the pictures, very clean and very well taken. Honestly from point of view I'm sure that you will rent it on spot. I'm not looking to make a business or a profit with the apartment, I'm just trying to find a good and trust person to take good care of the place. It is furnished but if you want you can use your furniture and deposit mine in the storage unit that is located near the building not far away. The rent is 660 CAD/month with everything included (heat, hydro, water, electricity, cable and internet-full package, 2 parking spots, laundry in-suite, washer and dryer). You will have full access to all the amenities of the building. Pets are allowed. I stayed in the apartment with my wife for 3 months. I'm a civil engineer and I work for a company that has an auction for a project in construction in London, United Kingdom, so my accommodation period in England will be about 4 years. Everything in the apartment is new so there will be no need for repairs.

This transaction is not made face to face, this is the whole reason for using RentTrack, for both of us to be 100% protected. For security and for your peace of mind I had attached an copy of my PASSPORT to see that I am very serious about everything.

Regarding the process, you will only have to deposit to RentTrack the first month of rent from contract and damage deposit 660 $ + 660 $ = 1320 $ CAD so they can proceed with the shipping, and you can receive the rental package (keys and documents). I hope that people are not falling for this scam. I knew something was not right because the rent is only $660 and thats way too low for Calgary. The more emails I got from him, the more sure I was that this is a scam.
