Room for Rent and other rental scams

I was being scammed by someone at the email [email protected] and they were trying to rent me a house while they were out of town on business. They wanted me to send a money gram and then would be sent the keys. The house was up for sale and there happened to be an open house after we had signed a lease to rent. The scammer said they thought we weren't serious so they kept trying to sell, even though they told us in the beginning they cancelled the contract with the realtor. I then googled the email address and discovered multiple other craigslist and similar website postings for other houses in different cities with the same contact email. Two of which had been flagged for removal. This is a scam. DO NOT TRY TO RENT FROM SOMEONE YOU HAVENT MET. DO NOT SEND MONEY TO A STRANGER. AND DO NOT TRY TO RENT A HOUSE YOU HAVE NOT BEEN PHYSICALLY SHOWN BY A LANDLORD!!
And don't try to rent from the scammer at [email protected]

If the pet seller or shipper asks for money to be sent via Western Union, Money Gram, any brand of gift card. Walmart To Walmart , Zelle , PayPal friends and family option, or mentions Cameroon

This is the original email they sent me. I emailed them about a different posting they had on Craigslist from one of my alternative email addresses and got the exact same response but with a different name and house information.

Original response:

hearing and i am very new in this landlord business.. However, My name is

take it as if it were yours. Pet are allowed as long as they are not

This is the email where they tried to solicit the money from me:

" hello how are you.thanks for your response..sorry i told you i am not around for now,i am on a business trip,i am sorry i couldn’t show you the inside myself..i am out of town, and i wont be back until few weeks, but i want to rent out the house before i get back, so that is why i sent you pictures and also gave you the address to see the surroundings and the environment, also if you are able to see the inside through the window.i need you to know that the home is on a high demand & i have some other people that are also interested in the home and are willing to move in but not too worry, i'll be giving it to you. glad you are interested in the house and that you did mail me First is why i'll make it yours... since you will be moving in you will have to make a security deposit to me (Security Deposit is Refundable) in order to secure the House and have the keys sent to you with immediately effect and prior to this, you'll be able to have access to the house and be able to take your time to map out your plans on how you want your new home to be like , however You can pay the Rent Later when you might have moved in already i believe this is very much flexible. you will send the payment through moneygram to me, and after the payment has been confirmed, i will have the keys and other documents sent to you via FEDEX same day delivery or next day delivery, also before you do that, i will send you a lease agreement, which you will sign and scan it back to me, do you agree to this?"

Granted, we just started emailing back and forth, and no money was exchanged (I wouldn't have done that without talking to him in person), but I was really hoping that it wasn't a scam like I was thinking it would be. Too good of a deal.

They replied with this, and this is when I got suspicious... Why would I send money to somebody I've never met in person or talked to on the phone, im sure thats why they added the whole "Im hard of hearing" BullShit. Lol & send the $$$ to their 'Secretary'... Who TF has a Secretary lol

Ok this sounded to good to be true so myself did my own research and come to find out I was so right about this! We have emailed back and fourth a couple times now and I must say things just started not making any sense the more and more we got into depth about this home! I drove to this home and knew this couldnt be right! Please ppl be cautious when trying to rent online!!! Looks like this person has been at this for some time now

This scammers current email address is [email protected] . He tried to get me on a house at address 1236 Washington St, Lincoln, NE, 68502. I willl be reporting him anywhere that I can! After I received the email asking for payment, I became super suspicious and called the realtor whose name was on the sign in the yard and he's like "oh yeah, I've had like 5 or 6 people call me about that." UGH! This Jerry Higley must be stopped! :evil:

The scammer is still at it unfortunately. Thank you for your post because you saved me a lot of money. My suspicion first came when I noticed a house for rent under the email [email protected] and the person trying to rent me a house had the email [email protected] so I decided to look up scam info under "3040 scam and it led me to this"

They used the name Pamela G. Brown for me and had the same exact email, hard of hearing out of town on business, etc. I am very upset about all of this because I am on the edge of being homeless ATM however I am grateful to you for saving me some time and money and hopefully saving others.
