Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

I have been doing some research and the death and Ebay protection seems to hint that this person is attempting to scam me. Below is a full email header, two phone numbers I have contacted the person with along with links to the pictures of the car along with the original craigslist posting. I tried a reverse image search for a couple images of the car which didn't yield any results. Any reply is appreciated! Also sorry for the massive size of this post.

Hi again, you said that you would take care of shipping, if the situation arises that I don't want to purchase the car after the inspection period are you still paying for that?

Hi,

The car is located in Chicago, IL at DAS ( Dependable Auto Shippers ) headquarters, in the container, sealed and ready for shipping. I would like to use eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection,so we can both be protected and insured. You will have 10 days so you can inspect the car. Once you have inspected the car and decided to keep it, you will confirm your decision to eBay and only then they will re-route the money in to my account, but if by any reason, you won't be satisfied with the car you can return it back for a full refund of your money. I will take care of the shipping, don't worry. You will receive the car with all the necessary papers (clear title, bill of sale, user’s manual, insurance etc). Just get back with your full name and full shipping address and I will get everything started as soon as possible, then eBay will contact you with more further instructions.

Thanks a lot!

My 2008 Honda Accord EX-L is still for sale,it has no problems at all and is lien cleared. My asking price is $2,000. Probably it deserves more, but I'm asking this price because it was my son's car, he loved it very much, but he didn't enjoy it...He died in a bike accident 9 months ago and now...I don't need it anymore. It brings me very bad memories and I want to get rid of it.It has 77,200 miles,I have a clear title for it,no liens or loans and never smoked in.If you're still interested please let me know. Hi and welcome to scamwarners, ronoc5518

yes, it is a scam. Never buy a car you can not see with your own eyes to inspect it.

At best you are buying a lemon. At worst a stolen car, or no car at all ( most likely no car). Pictures do not prove the car exists. They only prove a car that looks like it exists.

Follow craigslist advice to avoid scams : http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams
Avoiding Scams

Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.
Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".
Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.
Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.

The phone number is in New York zone 12, not Philadelphia, and the writing is African. The scammer has a fake eBay.

Actually....this ad seems very familiar to me. The person I suspect has connections in New York and New Jersey.

The '88' is significant and I am skeptical of a coincidence of that magnitude. Would you be able to post a link to the person's ebay? I tried to go to the actual ad you have linked but I can't see it now. It's been flagged for removal.

Hello jane.dough.

Hundreds of fake adverts appear on the Autotrader UK website advertising cars for sale where the scammer has just copied photos from someone else's advert. I report them daily and post details up on this forum.

I only have time to cover one vehicle ad site and I devote a lot of time to it, but the scammers are on every website - Ebay, Craigslist and anywhere else you care to think of. The story you have been given is straight from the criminals text book of why you can never be allowed to inspect the vehicle and why you should trust them. I can usually manage to track down where they copied the photos from.

The first warning sign is that the car is nearly new, low mileage and at a price no sane person would sell the vehicle for.

The scam seems to be much more prevalent in the UK than the USA and I suspect that may be because it's so much easier for criminals to open bank accounts in the UK. Not only that but the US legal system is much less tolerant of people misusing bank accounts. In spite of this, it won't stop them trying.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

I was almost scammed by this same person Bertha Wilson with the phone number 929-249-1375 and 929-249-1379. The exact same email about the car being in Birmingham, AL at a secured location. The spill about her son passing away 9 months ago in a bike accident. Ebay sent me a an email stating for me to purchase iTunes cards for $1500 and send them the numbers. I couldn't get Ms. Wilson (if that's who it really is) to talk with me on the phone. Seems she has lots of sons to pass away in bike accidents and many card to sell...(sarcasm). This person needs to be caught and arrested!!
