Craigslist John Brown "[email protected]" is this scam?

Hi everyone,

Just recently i bought an iphone on eBay. Because I bought an iphone, I need to sell my previous phone to cancel out the costs. I posted this post http://houston.craigslist.org/mob/3327298739.html onto Craigslist two days ago and early this morning at 5:49 a.m I received this email:

This is the first time I am selling on Craigslist and I only trust PayPal or a meet up to handle business. This is also the first and only email I have received from this John Brown.

Please help, is this a scam? And how do you know which email replies are or aren't scams?

I would need to see the next email to say with absolute certainty, but odds are very high that this is a scam. Three things tell me that is more than likely a scam. Most likely, he would go the fake paypal route--saying he is paying with paypal, then sending you fake paypal emails saying that the money is on hold and will be released when you provide proof of shipping. In reality, there has been no paypal activity, and the scammer just wants to steal your phone.

1) The English. Even in that small sample, the English is not consistent with an American. Mixing up verb tenses is a common African mistake.
2) The urgency/push for immediate response. Scammers want to move quickly, and push their scam through before you have a chance to think or investigate. The longer it takes, the more likely you will recognize the scam before sending the phone.
3) The very different names in the email addresses. Sometimes people will email from multiple addresses (e.g. work and home) but having completely different names in those addresses is more often consistent with a scammer.

@luminuex, 100% scam. I can tell by the writing and in reality he responded a fake craigslist ad.

This gang of scammers will send you emails about threats with the FBI or other Law Enforcement Agencies. They will also sometimes send official looking emails from different authorities. All the emails are actually sent from them. The emails are all lies and false.
