I am new here and glad I found this website, today!! Here's my 'spammer' and his emails, I hope this helps, this is not an 'all at sea' job, his 'name' is David Wright (email in body of post) and he's got a 'shipping agent':

Thanks for getting back to me i have check the listing and I'm okay with it so I'm satisfied with the Price. I really want this to be a surprise for my friend so i wont let him know anything about it until it gets delivered to him .i have a shipping agent that do pick up for me, they will be the one to pick it up for me after the payment has been made to your account. I will be paying you through PayPal which is a fast, safe and reliable method of payment. If you don't have a PayPal account just logon to http://www.paypal.com and setup your PayPal account, after setting up your PayPal account you locate the request money button located at the top of your PayPal account home page, use it to request money directly from my PayPal account which is [email protected] once I receive your money request from PayPal, I will submit payment to you immediately via PayPal asap.
Thanks
David Wright

I suggested he came to see the car, or sent his 'shipper' up with the cash, since he had it available in Paypal it would not have been a problem, and if his 'agent' was happy with the vehicle he could pay me the cash. Here's the reply:

Email 2:
I'm off town for work.. I would have come view the car before paying but that won't be possible like I explained. More so, I would have sent someone to come but I wold want to make a real secret so nobody knows about the surprise. I've check the listing and am okay with what i saw there.Meanwhile,my shipper who is also a motor trader will be coming for the pick up and will provide the details and sign every necessary details needed to be sign.
Regards,
David Wright

You're right, the English and grammar is appalling, but I could have very easily been taken in were it not for a few alarm bells ringing and finding this website. So thank you for clearing up what could have been a costly mess for me. Hope this helps someone else, like you helped me.
Regards, R

The risk is that it appears to be a dream purchase, not having to deal with a tyre kicker and someone wanting to bargain with you face to face, so it's understandable that it's tempting to go along with it.

The scammer is hiding the 'trap' from you until the last moment, when he'll tell you that you have to pay the imaginary collection agent, but that payment will be the only real money in this transaction, and it's going straight to the fake buyer, usually by Western Union or MoneyGram. At that stage, believing the spoof Paypal message to be real, you don't think to wonder why he didn't pay the agent himself and why he doesn't want you to pay him by Paypal.

A lot of people probably see through it at that stage, but it saves wasting your time if you can see them coming.

The scammer may only get one in a hundred successes, but he's probably sending out a hundred a day.

And here is the 3rd scam for this same car. I have asked Autotrader to put some warning up on their website for unwary sellers about Paypal scams. To date I have not received any replies from them. Here is my last scammer's details:

NAME: MRS Alexandra Williams
TELEPHONE:
EMAIL: [email protected]

1st Message:
What s the condition? and the final price you will let this go? reply back asap and more picture will be gladly appreciated. thanks

2nd message:
I just wanted to make sure nothing is been left out,I am quite
okay with your price, I need you to understand that I am willing and
ready to purchase it right away, put it off the AD site and consider
me as your favorite buyer, Please note that I have a shipper/mover who
handles my shipping arrangement anywhere in the world,he would be
coming for the pickup, after you have received payment, which would
be through paypal, If this is acceptable, advice soon as I am a
marine engineer and I am buying this for myself,I am at base right now
.I can only pay through paypal at the moment as I do not have access
to my bank account online, but I have it attached to my pal
account, and this is why I insisted on using paypal to pay,all I will
need is your pay pal email address to make the payments. In the mean
time, can you send me more pictures (if available)? I want you to
provide me with the following information for me to proceed with the
Payment...

1) PayPal e-mail account for payment?
2) Full Pick up Location?
3)is there any other issues with the item not mentioned?
4)kindly remove the post?

I would be glad to make the payment immediately through PayPal so
kindly get back to me with your PayPal ID. You need not to worry
yourself about the document to sign and shipment,i will instruct the
shipping company to handle that therefore in order to complete the
transaction do get back to me with your PayPal ID and total cost so
that I can make the payment asap. I will be waiting for your reply!

Hi there,

The 2008 Audi A5 2.7TDI Sport COUPE is still available for £8500.

The car is in excellent condition, garage kept and accident free. It has no dents or scratches. The mileage is real and I never had any problems with the engine. The car looks and works just perfect. It comes with MOT (valid till 08/2014) and Road Tax ( valid till 07/2014). I have all the original papers including full service history.

I must tell you that we recently moved in the Northern part of United Kingdom. We bought a property in a beautiful sea-side city called Inverness (in Scotland). The car is here aswell.
We are a couple (I have 54 and my wife is 51 years old) and we love to spend our time on the road. If you are really interested we are ready to make a trip to England and meet you personally this week. You can take the car for a test-drive and any kind of inspection.
Please tell us where you live, I am sure we can arrange a meeting, a region acceptable for us and for you in the same time or we can deliver the car to your home.

Thank you and let me know,

Richard

Welcome to Scamwarners leviboxer.

A very interesting advert and some interesting features.

The advert appears to be using the identity of a genuine dealer who uses the site, also to sell cars.

I've saved a copy of the page as I think this one could disappear quickly, and once that happens I have nothing to research, so your lead is invaluable. The more examples we get the better, and the fresher the better too.

One group I've been looking at I've found 30 vehicles they've used in scams, but have undoubtedly used many more and they've been operating unhindered since 2006

It really is time this criminal industry got some interest from something that that used to exist called law enforcement.

If you search the autotrader site using the term @TGRAPES.CO.UK it's been blitzed with ads all claiming to be private sales under the identity of another dealer.

I've contacted the dealer by phone and they confirm that these adverts are nothing to do with them.

Keep reports coming in because UK law enforcement and the government need to be energised in to activity as there are hundreds of victims, and many victimised honest companies, who are entitled to expect something to be done.

The price is ridiculous for a model of this year and they're not difficult to spot. Again it's posted under the identity of a regular and genuine dealer's identity. So there'll be unhappy buyers AND sellers.

What are the chances are dealer with a website is going to ask buyers to contact them via a Hotmail or Google address ?

These scam adverts should not be appearing on ad sites and they'll only lose the sites credibility and trade.

In spite of the apparent cleverness of the scammer's ability to add fraudulent adverts in this way, the peculiar thing is that they are unlikely to attract many victims for reasons I won't mention, because it's not for me to point out where the scammer is going wrong.

It's also true that they require a lot of work to set up and are very easy to spot.

Hi again,

Thank you for getting back, Anyway, I'll like to know your final asking price. How I wish i could come for inspection but I'm currently out of town for my UN course.

Due to this inability to bring cash physically, the best way for me to pay will be through PayPal which is safer for you and I will cover the PayPal transfer fees. Kindly send me your PayPal account email address so i can pay in. I will arrange with my pick up agent to collect from you as it is the best way I can handle this professionally.

Please, I'd like to know certain things too; Are you the first owner? What is your reason for selling? I'm sorry, just want to be sure about the sale before i proceed on payment.

The only good thing is that, considering the large numbers of scammers pretending to sell cars on all ad sites, they must be irritating the 'bejesus' (an exclamation traditionally attributed to the Irish, used to express surprise or for emphasis - pronounced bejaysus - for anyone unfamiliar with the expression :D ) out of each other.

Paying for a car without seeing it first is wildly reckless and, though it's nice if you can sell a car that way it's most likely to be one of these witless scammers with a silly explanation.

To my amazement the TGRAPES.CO.UK scammer is still active but, to give credit to auto trader.co.uk, they are stamping on his scam ads promptly.

My own personal opinion is that the police, banks and ad sites need to act in unison to wipe these scammers out. It's not just a matter of the victims who lose money but they are destroying UK businesses, car trade and the ad sites themselves too. It's not just crime but an economic attack operated by organised criminal gangs and apathy isn't an option. No one tactic will defeat the scammers but if bank accounts are difficult to obtain, ads quickly taken down and the police monitoring the activity, it won't be economically worthwhile for criminals.

The mere fact that this group are still operating using the same domain name suggests that they aren't bright and can't adapt. They can't spell either.

The advert associated with the addie marked in red hasn't been taken down yet. As mentioned before, this attempted scam is unlikely to be successful, and I'll leave it to the scammer to try and work out why - and I can trace them quicker than they can post them - and I've nothing better to do. :D

What's the difference between a maggot and a car ad scammer ? - none whatsoever.

One reason why this ad scammer is wasting his time is that by posting a nil value on his ads it means that his ads won't come up for anyone making a search on the site because you can't put a nil value in the search terms.

That's just one defect in his ads, apart from his obsessive compulsive disorder that appears to compel him to press on regardless long after his idea has past its sell by date. His new list of scam ads.
