Saw and advert on Gumtree yesterday (19 September 2014) for sale for £4,600 and called the number listed which went to an Orange network answer service. Then received the text below this evening, and replied by e-mail but as yet have received no reply or information as yet, but did carry out a google search on the e-mail address and became aware of this site.

It's a scam and he won't let you see it before you pay and you should never pay for something you've never seen. The basic scam has been worked since the Middle Ages, which makes it 500 years, and is the origin of the saying buying a 'pig in a poke'. A 'poke' is a bag and at fairs scammers would have a cat in a bag and sell it as being a pig which is much less valuable, but you won't get anything, not even a cat.

He'll make his location very remote, or say he's located abroad, or a soldier going abroad, he doesn't like people visiting him or he'll have a fictional escrow company who'll make sure you aren't duped. He's been working this for a very long time and uses lots of excuses and he'll drop you quickly if you insist on seeing the vehicle, because all he has are photos.

Hundreds of fraudulent adverts are posted each day and I specialise on Autotrader UK, but if you take in all vehicle ad sites thousands are posted daily and they even appear on dealer pages on Autotrader UK.

Anyone who posts an advert knowing he can't make it available to view is an idiot, or usually a scammer. If you buy without viewing, it's very likely you'll lose all your money.
