The dying widow scam is prolific. It is one of the most popular email scams originating out of Cote D'Ivoire. The basic premise is that a deeply religious woman with a terminal illness, no dependants and surrounded by evil in-laws wants to bestow her vast fortune upon a complete stranger 
Unfortunately, any person who responds to the scam will face demands for the payment of various transaction, legal, tax fees, etc. None of which are genuine. The scammers' wish to avoid telephone communications is due to his poor grasp of spoken English rather than ill health.
