Mr. xx
Have a good day
Our hearts don't get much heavier than they are with the news of the passing of the inspirational and courageous Alice Uvarova.
Alice faced battles in her short life, that no one should have to face in an entire lifetime. Battling three different types of cancer from the age of just two years.
“Your child has cancer” are four words no parent ever wants to hear.
Alice was just two years old when diagnosed the first time after suffering from consistently high temperatures in 2008. Parents, Karl and Nadezhda, took Alice to the emergency department at Nepean Hospital in Sydney where she was transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for brain scans. The scans revealed Brooke had a golf ball sized tumour at the back of her brain, inside her tiny head.
Doctors advised that her life expectancy was 2 -5 years. Alice underwent surgery to remove the tumour followed by twelve months of chemotherapy. Three years after the diagnosis, Alice was back on track.
Then the nightmare began again. In January 2011 Alice’s parents heard those four words for the second time. The tumour had started to regrow and was fortunately discovered at an early stage. Alice underwent surgery again then endured radiotherapy five days a week over four weeks. Her recovery went well.
Three years later Alice was living a relatively normal life. Alice was happy and healthy, although suffering some lasting side effects from her treatment including hearing loss, learning difficulties, and Cerebral Shunt and coordination problems.
In August 2014, Alice had just started elementary school and the Uvarov's family were about to have their lives turned upside down for a third time. Alice had another brain tumour, DIPG.
Alice was admitted to hospital immediately and had a cerebral shunt inserted on the left side of her brain to reduce the pressure and fluid build up. A week later she underwent a biopsy procedure and it was confirmed this was a different and unrelated brain tumour to those before.
“I really understood how sick Alice was about four days after she was re-diagnosed. Dr McCowage who had treated Alice for her first two cancers walked in to the room, looked at me and shook his head and walked over – he didn’t say a word, just gave me a hug” Karl, Alice’s father said.
But Alice is a fighter and love her Home and Away.
Alice is an empathetic and selfless young lady and we are proud to know her. Alice entered our GeneTherapyTrial knowing that she would not be helping herself, but other children in the future.
Words can't express our sadness. We thank Alice's parents for allowing us to share her story.
Alice now being treated in Russia at the Institute Sklifosovsky. We believe that she will win the cancer. But we ask you to help her now. The treatment is very costly, but the doctors are hoping for the best and do everything what they can. The main brain surgery on February 14, and Alice could die before that time. Please help this strong girl, and God bless you.
