It is increasingly common for scammers to trick people out of their passwords for their email or other online services.
For certain, anyone who replies and receives a request to send money by some insecure method such as Western Union or Money-gram would then potentially fall victim.
If in any doubt, contact the owner of the mail by other means, or their family - to ascertain the truth of the claim.
I am currently in Lisbon Portugal, most of my belongings including my phone
