Company Representative scams, Payment Processing scams and other Employment scams.
#218907 by want2helpbaiters Sat Sep 13, 2014 4:25 pm
I've read up a lot on scams and some of the hilarious baiting scenarios that have taken place. But I know these scams are always evolving....

This one was new to me. I have found job recruiter scams when Googling, but did not come across any info about it on either this site or AntiFraud News. When I look up employment scams, generally I see advance-fee fraud or money muling stuff. So I'm not sure if the job recruitment scams are not that wide-spread?

I don't actually know if this one I got is a scam or not. I was sure it was until I saw that the recruitment company is on LinkedIn and there is quite a bit of Googleable info on them, and I didn't see anything related to a scam. So that is why I popped on here (I'm usually just a lurker).

This is actually the second contact that I've gotten from a "recruiter" after updating my Monster account. I didn't realize that some of my privacy settings were not what I would have wanted them to be. The first contact was supposedly from a company that had a 3 mo long position at Pepsico, but between me having the WORST time understanding the accent of the lady who called me and the dates not actually jiving I let that drop. Never occurred to me at the time that it was a scam, though. However, I thought it strange that a recruiting company would tell me what company was hiring as I wanted to just call Pepsi myself to ask about the job. (If I recall, I did Google that recruitment company and it didn't have great reviews, but nothing saying "scam".)

Now, this company just contacted me after I updated my Monster account again. I responded to the initial email and said I might be interested and asked how do I apply and if there was any microbiology work in the job. He ignored my question about the micro and I felt weird about his reply email so I did not bother responding. I looked at the job listings of the big company that supposedly had the 1 year contract position then I called them and said that I did not see a listing online. The person in HR whom I spoke with said that it was probably an old listing. Then the "recruiter" called. Very thick accent. Asked for me by my last name- no salutation, just my last name. I asked if that was the job he had just emailed me about. I told him that I had called the company and they don't have that job listing, it was old. He appeared to ignore that (I could not understand the response) and he went on to the fact that it was a W2 job. I asked him what that meant. He ignored that and just went on to tell tell me that I needed to confirm if the pay rate was OK or not. I told him I was not interested, hung up, then started Googling job recruitment scams and saw that scammers will pose as employers on Monster/Careerbuilder, etc and get your details from there. They'll offer to place you in a job at a well-known company then ask you to pay a fee. I didn't get that far with these guys, but I wonder if he would have sent a form for me to fill in my SSN or DL#, as that is also something these scams will try to get. Best defense is to set your accounts to hide your contact details.

When I Googled this company, I found an actual recruitment company in VA. The email addy is at that company.com. This is why I am not 100% sure of this being a scam, however everything else about it seems to fall into the scam category, including bad grammar. I'm including headers and email addy with this. I want to make sure people are aware of this type of scam and I'd be curious to see if someone can show me about how that last nagging piece (the legit company and email) is fake. (Maybe this is it in the header? (domain of millenniumsoft.com does not designate permitted sender hosts)?) They do ask when you are available for an in-person interview (which maybe they would change to phone or email later? Or just get the $ from you and never address that, using it to look legit?)

I ran the header through the IP checker at 419eater- and it comes up as located in India. Not much of a surprise with all the computer outsourcing, and that would explain grammar issues and accents.

Below are the 2 emails from the "company", then the header.

I don't know if I'd be quick to call it a scam, but I sure would be super cautious.

http://virginindianhairexporters.com/in ... on/contact
same address, different suite #, same fax #.

and, it appears you have all ready found out, but change your monster and other job search engines so they must contact you through the site. Remove your email address from your resume so no one can download it and contact you that way, or create a single email address only for the purpose of job search. That way you will know how the person got your email address.

They are registered with the Virginia Corporation Commission but its odd the BBB has no file on them . I would go to the BBB website and ask them to develop a file on that business .

I have been unable to find anything good or bad about them . No complaints . No Reviews .

The Address in the job description googles up a medical technology company in Maryland . You could look that up and inquire at the company as to the validity .

Thank you for your replies! It didn't seem like a cut-and-dry scam. Seems weird that HR at the big company didn't have the job listed, though....

I did change my Monster info so I shouldn't have this issue again. But I still want other people to be aware of this type of scam!
