I received the exact same fraud email - besides obvious fraud signals, this one is rather well made, because:

• The URL mdgallc.com exists and they send emails from this domain (so they either registered or hacked it)
• There even exists a registered advocate with this name and according to the "Barreau du Québec", he works at a company with the same name
• The person he represented really existed and has died two years ago in same region as mdgallc.com
• The person he represented has a very uncommon surname - same as mine, so it is almost a perfect match
• They probably only attack people with same surname, probably less than 50 people around the world…

After first answer, the following email is sent (verified from mdgallc.com domain - so they seem to have access to that domain or hacked it):

Our deceased client, Mr Peter XXX, had a "permanent life insurance policy." Amounting to the sum of Nine Million Eight Hundred and Twenty Thousand United States Dollars (USD 9,820,000).

Per bank policy, if a deposit remains unclaimed for 10 years, it must be sent to the state's abandoned property division.

I will file an affidavit with the court naming you as the next beneficiary. I will also request registration of my late client's estate because there was no will.
There will be a few legal steps we'll need to follow together.
I'd really appreciate your support as we work towards this goal.

The domain mdgallc.com is fake, it was registered 3 months ago by the scammer to try and appear legitimate.

There even exists a registered advocate with this name and according to the "Barreau du Québec", he works at a company with the same name

Scammers will often steal the identities of real people, again in an attempt to appear legitimate.

The person he represented has a very uncommon surname - same as mine, so it is almost a perfect match

The surname in the email is specifically added to match the name of the individual recipients - in the email I posted, the surname of his client "Peter" will be totally different to yours and match "my name". It is just a coincidence that there really was a Peter [your surname] who died in the local area. The scammer just thinks he'll get more responses if he tailors his emails to the recipient and sends them individually than spamming thousands of identical generic emails by bcc.

The best thing for you to do now is just delete his email and don't respond. Don't accuse him of being a scammer, he will just try and deny it and keep on scamming you.
