Under no circumstance and for any reason should you EVER make any payment before viewing and inspecting ANY vehicle you intend to buy.

The scammer has no vehicle and he can't scam you if you insist on viewing the vehicle first.

Paying in to a bank account provides no protection whatsoever. If you've paid a 'money mule' no one will refund your stolen money.

Camper van ad scammers are lazier than most and frequently re-use photos and re-post the same adverts again and again, so that even when the original advert gets deleted, there's a good chance they'll re-use the same photos again.

I work in financial crime and unfortunately see this scam a lot. Once you've parted with the cash it's not easy to get your money back, but if you have been taken in here's what you should do:

1) Contact the police to obtain a crime reference number - make sure this is not an incident number (which is given out about easily) but a crime reference number.

2) Inform the bank who holds the account where you sent the money immediately of the scam. They will contact their fraud team to review the account in question. As you are a complete stranger and it's difficult proving your story, having a crime reference number backs up your claim that you have been the victim of a scam. Because you are not the account holder, they won't tell you what they are doing. They may freeze the account while they ask the scammer to prove entitlement to the funds that have come into the account. During this time no money can be paid into or out of the account (so you maybe preventing more people becoming victim of this scam).

3) Remember to tell the scammer's bank how much you paid, when and your sort code & account number. The bank will be able to see where the money came in from and thus if your sort code and account numbers match those on the payment it confirms to the bank that you made it (of course, only give sort code & account information to the bank - no-one else!) This helps when the bank talk to the scammer and asks him why the person who made the payment is accusing them of a scam.

If the scammer can't prove that he is entitled to the funds after 14 days, the bank account will be closed down.
The bank may then decide to send the remainder of the money that was transferred back to your bank. Your bank may then decide to make a good will gesture, paying you the remaining funds that were recovered. The bank doesn't have to do this as you willingly made the payment but it will try to help you were it can.

4) Inform Autotrader/Ebay about this scam. Once they are notified, they will review the account holder's details and should block their accounts while they carry out further investigation. Again, they will talk to the scammer and ask for evidence that they are really selling a camper van, which is not as easy to prove as you might think.

5) Speak to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Time is everything, so try to contact the police/bank asap as the scammer will be wanting to withdraw the cash as quickly as possible before their bank account is frozen.
