This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union or MoneyGram with a promise that he will send the keys through a courier company.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

The scammer has continued unabated. He now rents a fake apartment in Geneva under the name of Patrice Kelly Martel. Apartment on Boulevard Georges-Favon 8, 1204 Geneva. Initially it offered a contract written and signed by a lawyer: Shana Smith, 7 Abington Rd, Kensington, London W8. Always and even his phone number where he can be reached: 447035908629.
It is March 13, 2012.
Here the contract it offers. It calls attention to the passport number. Our name has been replaced by XXXX.

Geneva Tenancy / Rental Agreement Form
The Landlord agrees to rent, and the tenant agrees to take the premises described
below. Both parties agree to keep, perform, and fulfill the promises, conditions and
agreements expressed below:

entire agreement between the parties and this Agreement shall not be modified,

thanks for useful info, I got in contact with this guy, he offered an apartment in Amsterdam under the name of Crowe Robert John. I have the impression that his mails are always the same. Also the contract appears to be the same.
I began to be very careful when he started to write in a very bad English, however he claims to be American living in the UK. When he came with an idea that he will send me the keys via mail, he became very suspicious.
However I found him by name of the "lawyer" he states in the contract.
