Beware of emails from: [email protected] & itryquawere@g

I posted something for sale on craigslist (New York City) and got an initial reply from [email protected] and then a follow up email from [email protected]. The first message (reply to Craigslist ad) asked if the item was still available and I said it was and provided a number to call. The second message said:

Hi,
Am glad it's available. I'm going on a vacation out of town but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6 business days. I'll add $20 extra for the delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment. Awaiting your info.

I replied (stupidly provided my contact info before I googled the email) and said that I needed their contact info, and got this reply:

Your payment will be sent right away by my assistant, please consider it sold. I will appreciate if the ad is taken off craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor.

I thought it seemed sketchy, so I then googled the email and found a posting to this "scamwarners" site, and am SO thankful someone else posted about it. I hope nobody else falls for this jerk!

There isn't anything the scammer can do with your address. They may send you a check. It will be for more than you were asking. The scammer will instruct you to deposit the check Don't and send the overage back to them.

The check will be a forgery. Regardless of how well it is made, it is a forgery. It some times takes the banking system some time to realize the forgery. They will realize it though and you will be liable for all of the money. People have even gotten arrested for these kinds of situations.

Either turn the check into the police with the emails you have received, or deface / destroy it so you have no liability.
